I rarely make rockabilly retrotransmission playlists, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t have a soft spot for the music in this set: The Cramps, Demented Are Go, Guana Batz, The Sharks, Reverend Horton Heat, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent and Jerry Lee Lewis, on and on. When I was a teenager I used to stay up late on school nights with my radio next to my bed so I could listen to Hot Rod Ron’s Checkered Strip on Tucson’s community radio station, KXCI. I heard ska, rockabilly, surf, and old school Sun Studios classics on his show, and I loved it. I made this show (and another, that sadly, was lost to the ether), in homage to Hotrod Ron in spring of 2013 (I should also note that this music reminds me of my dad, a hot rod aficionado).
