Tonight I’m DJing a vinyl set with a friend from NYC. In honor of that, and the fact that I’ll soon be living again in New York, I’m posting a vintage retrotransmission playlist from fall 2012 simply titled “NYC” featuring tracks from Suicide, The Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, Lounge Lizards, Swans, Patti Smith, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, Jim Carroll, Dead Boys, Blondie, Ramones, New York Dolls, Richard Hell, Television, Misfits, Sonic Youth, and lots more. In other news, fresh retrotransmission playlists are in the works and will be up soon, so keep checking the site out every Monday and thanks for visiting!
Last Thursday I was beyond fortunate to see Helios Creed perform as Chrome at El Corazon in Seattle, definitely something I never thought I would get a chance to see. Chrome is an amazing, and deeply under-appreciated band. They were an experimental, “acid punk,” “godfathers of industrial rock” group formed in San Francisco in the 1970s by Damon Edge and Gary Spain. Their first singer quit after their first album, at which point Helios Creed joined the band. Edge died in 1995, but Creed continued touring as Chrome throughout the late 90s and has recently begun to do so again. Chrome’s music is heavily distorted and sounds alien, which accounts for many of their sci-fi album titles including Alien Soundtracks, Half Machine Lip Moves, Blood on the Moon, 3rd From the Sun, Half Machine From the Sun, and, most recently, Feel It Like a Scientist. And, most importantly (to me), the name of my radio show, retrotransmission, is taken from the Chrome album of the same name. In honor of the show, which sounded absolutely killer, I’ve posted this all Chrome playlist (with some solo Edge and Creed, respectively, thrown in for good measure), from this past spring. Enjoy.
Today I’m posting one of my favorite retrotransmissions of all time: The Black Show. This show, from spring 2013, features rock n roll, goth, punk, and post punk bands paying homage to black. Summer goth reigns.
I just returned from a awesome 72 hour vacation in Los Angeles and I’m still feeling those weird LA vibes. Get into it with this vintage retrotransmission playlist, from winter 2013, full of LA punk bands including X, Adolescents, TSOL, Black Flag, Descendents, The Nerves, Agent Orange, Social Distortion, Circle Jerks, Germs, Fear, The Weirdos, and tons more.
